I've got one Gigantor XL and one Communotron HG-55 but I'm not sure how many batteries I want. Thoughts? [01:04:30] This will be for planets inside Jool. [21:36:41] Didn't know an iridum satellite could flare /twice/ within five minutes on the same overhead pass. [21:43:31] Aliens [22:15:54] maltesh: It only works because the earth is flat [22:16:33] Actually could have been rotating its solar panels or something [22:17:26] (IIRC a lot of satellites rotate their solar panels parallel to their velocity vector in order to reduce orbital decay on the night side) [22:17:34] Action: maltesh shrugs. "It just meant I had to revise the script I was using to turn Heavens Above listings into Google Calendar Events. " [22:18:04] How did you observe it and what does the script do? [22:18:06] The initial logic I'd been using to deal with the timing drift as the days passed was that an Iridium Flare of the same Satellite within five minutes was the same event. [22:19:01] And I haven't observed it yet, I was just looking through the logs of my script to ensure that something I'd fixed yesterday was working. [22:19:41] So you have something automatically tracking satellite passes? [22:20:39] Yeah. Back in 2011, I was messing around with Google Apps Script to go to the Heavens Above website, read in ISS passes for my location, and post them to a Google Calendar. [22:21:12] After that got really complicated, I tried it with Yahoo Pipes for awhile, and then moved it into C# briefly, but went back to Google Apps Script earlier this year. [22:21:48] Also, it now also tracks visibility of Tiangong-1 and Tiangong-2, as well as Iridium Flares. [22:22:10] And what logged the double flare? Was that a Heavens Above prediction or did some hardware actually record that? [22:23:30] It's Heavens above. From my location, on December 18th, it looks like Iridium 64 will frair at 5:19:40 PM and 5:23:35 PM. [22:23:38] Flare, even. [22:24:43] Ah, then [22:24:43] neat [22:25:07] I already thought you had some sort of scope logging satellite passes :D [22:25:27] That would have been /awesome/. [22:26:53] The thing that i wound up doing the script this year was trying to identify individual passes/flares so I could update the Calendar Events automatically as the predictions changed. Previously, I'd been deleting all events on the calendar every day, and adding new ones. [22:28:38] Updating the events allows me to set up notifications on the events if I decide I'm going to view one, because depending on how far in the future the Heavens Above predictions go, I've seen events drift as much as 30 seconds over 24 hours. [22:30:04] I have a really nice app on my Android to track ISS and Iridium flares and planets. Free app, pay for extra features, pretty decent. [22:30:26] Yeah. Heavens Above also has an official app, as well. [22:31:35] But this project was basically the second thing I started doing with Google Scripting and Javascript, so I've got a soft spot for it.
