[01:09:46] what size cannon would one need to shoot something into the sun? (ignoring fancy gravity assist maneuvers or thing being disintegrated by friction in the atmosphere) [01:57:19] uh, 30 km/s minus Oberth. Ish. [01:59:10] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+o APlayer' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [02:07:46] 27 km/s for going from 1 au to 1 R_ [02:14:12] Meh, 29 km/s from Earth's surface. [02:30:39] it takes a lot to slow down enough to reach star lol [02:30:51] I cheated and went other way [02:31:14] with huge leverage I easily deorbited and blew up at kerb [02:36:20] Note: that was for Sol. For Kerbol, it's more like 9 km/s [02:48:31] lol ok [03:31:10] What's the deal with relay antennas vs regular ones? I don't get it [03:32:49] relay ones can extend control ranges for probes [03:32:58] So regular antennas can't do that? [03:33:27] I do have remote tech installed, and at this point I'm no longer sure what it even adds vs what's vanilla [03:34:12] Like I can have an antenna pointed at kerbin, and one pointed at "active vessel," then point the active vessel at it... and that should be the same, right? [03:34:21] Yes, as in a regular antennas require a direct link back to Kerbin. But signals can go through multiple relay antennas instead& [03:34:34] So a relay can just be pointed at kerbin and it's fine [03:34:40] or does the relay even point anywhere [03:34:43] does it just boost signal [03:35:52] I think in stock, all antennas are isotropic (though planets and moons can block them) [03:36:06] Not sure about remote tech. [03:37:48] ¯\_(Ä)_/¯ [03:38:02] just gonna go with whatever it says then, in which case I'll probably ignore relays [03:38:28] There was a version where you had to point them... the general rule was, the further the range, the smaller the directional cone [03:39:12] then a few people found some problems with it after one of KSP's updates.. not sure it got fixed [03:40:19] Put a ridiculously powerful antenna in a polar orbit of kerbin and call it good imo [03:40:50] Can a pair of satellites in a polar Kerbol orbit cover the entire system? [03:41:17] I think the range on the bigger antennas might be enough, but the dV for the plane change might be kinda crazy [04:01:46] In principle, mostly [04:02:52] Planets cause small blindspots. Also, you'd want them to be on highly eccentric orbits I think? [04:03:12] Possibly, or maybe on highly regular orbits? Exactly 180 degrees off? [04:03:33] depending on the range, maybe I'd want them closer on the same orbit to make sure they could see each other, but in theory they'd be able to cover the whole system [04:04:16] a regular orbit would be easier to do anyway, an eccentric orbit would take more dV because you have to drop nearer to the sun, right? [04:08:48] The plane change would make an eccentric orbit reasonable. A bigger problem is that the ideal orbits would have arguments of periapsis over the star's poles instead of the equator. [04:09:32] I guess that would actually be pretty simple though [04:10:18] once you leave Kerbin you're on a stable, regular orbit around Kerbol, so you can change the plane to 90 degrees and it'll still be pretty much circular [04:11:17] and since it's mostly circular then, you can change the argument of periapsis easily [04:15:29] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+o UmbralRaptor' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [04:58:21] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+o BPlayer' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [06:51:47] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+o APlayer' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [06:53:17] https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ce062dbf2dfa7d94da00ce3464a00a928e07e16519f3c717c46d137b7adcec6d.jpg [06:53:41] related https://xkcd.com/1683/ [09:33:09] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+o APlayer' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [12:28:08] Action: darsie didn't find a mute function for KSP. [12:29:05] Just the sound slider settings. [12:38:21] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+o APlayer' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [13:13:17] i rarely find mute options in games... just set the sound slider to 0... [13:19:41] I wish "mute when game does not have focus" was a more common configuration option [13:20:28] uhm, yeah, i want to disable that in so many games... [13:21:18] I would turn it on everywhere [13:21:35] (but that's why it should be a config option and not default behaviour) [13:22:16] even worse are games that automatically minimize when not in focus [13:22:41] oh yeah, that I hate [13:23:55] and there is an annoying behaviour in kde that brings fullscreen windows to front when they get focus, which doesn't seem to be configurable [13:52:03] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+o APlayer' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [14:05:07] I'm going at 10 km/s on a solar escape trajectory and want to get out far, so it's running in background. [17:31:38] new ksp update wew [17:31:51] is it the one where we can finally spawn kerbals in seats? [18:04:05] http://www.planetary.org/blogs/guest-blogs/imaging-the-earth-from-lunar-orbit.html [18:05:15] I really thought they would delay 1.5 longer and keep adding more part reworks [18:05:23] but instead we have it now [18:05:27] what, it happened now? [18:05:31] and half the parts still look rather poor [18:05:37] yes i thought they would rework everything [18:05:42] why is it 1.5? [21:10:57] Lo [21:24:41] I will try to start converting my 25cc engine for putting it on a plane soon [21:24:52] will take a 16" prop or something [21:24:59] should run pretty well [21:53:52] Hello? [21:54:49] Hello? [21:55:03] Hi there. [21:55:09] Hi here [21:55:10] oh, hi [21:55:18] 1.5 is out, now. [21:55:51] So I've noticed. Hoping to dl it shortly. [21:56:19] Been running KSP at work the last couple weeks. [21:56:31] bad Jennifer [21:56:59] (I'm a children's librarian, I'm getting paid to do this.) :p [21:57:05] Ohh wow :) [21:57:40] Is it hard work? :) [21:57:51] Anyway, have recently restarted my winter skygazing program and am using KSP on the 50% of days the Florida sky clouds over. [21:59:51] What I'm trying to figure out at the moment is how to get the Atlas-Agena and Gemini craft out of the scenario so I can run them on their own. [22:00:36] Since First Man is out, I'm thinking of demonstrating Armstrong's first flight, but I don't have the expertise to go through the scenario proper. [22:01:06] Sounds like you're talking about the History pack. [22:01:20] [22:01:30] Action: darsie doesn't have that. [22:01:48] Darn. [22:02:32] I'm going back and forth between demonstrating basic orbital mechanics and getting the kids to help me improve and launch a Kerbal 2. [22:03:04] ("OK, so the ship only made it to 3km. What do we need to get it higher?") [22:03:27] What's a Kerbal 2? [22:04:40] You need less gravity ;). [22:04:45] One of the basic stock ships. [22:05:02] Launch from Gilly ;). [22:05:08] LOL [22:05:18] Heh [22:05:52] Although that will probably get you *lower* down the solar gravity well. [22:05:56] Hey, Umbral. Been a long time since I was in here. [22:06:08] whats new in 1.5? [22:06:17] Okay, interesting. How many are picking up on the more fuel part? [22:06:22] Oh, I imagine horrid explosions will be eye-catching. [22:06:25] Action: UmbralRaptor waves at Jennifer [22:06:55] Looks like mostly improvements to existing stuff, no new parts? [22:06:57] Tank2333: mostly parts are shinier, but also some stuff with burn times. [22:07:08] hm [22:07:44] Since I pretty much rely on MechJeb (boo, hiss), I'll wait on it. [22:08:36] But then, I've only started playing again recently, since I got the brainstorm of running it for the kids at work. [22:08:54] I propose less fuel :) http://bksys.at/bernhard/temp/screenshot68.png I flew this rocket to Minmus surface, IIRC. [22:09:17] Nice! [22:09:23] darsie this thing gets to orbit? as is? [22:09:27] yes [22:09:35] O.O [22:09:48] Did you get it back, or was it a one-way trip? [22:09:48] Ohh, wait, this one refuels in orbit. [22:09:56] i see [22:10:17] But it makes orbit. [22:10:28] Minmus one way. [22:10:48] Dunno if it would make it back. Maybe. [22:12:03] Try launching it opposite to Minmus' orbital vector. That's gotten me home in a pinch a couple times. [22:12:45] Umm, looks like I flew it to Mun surface: http://bksys.at/bernhard/temp/screenshot71.png http://bksys.at/bernhard/temp/screenshot72.png so it probably would make it back from Minmus, although would probably burn up during reentry. [22:21:45] God dammit [22:21:59] UmbralRaptor: did you see the news in #SpaceX [22:22:08] no [22:22:50] Paul G Allen died [22:23:30] :( [22:24:14] blarg [22:37:22] hi rokker [22:37:50] guten tag [22:38:00] how are you tank [22:40:34] Jeb is 50 Tm from the Sun. [22:41:14] OK, currently launching two Kerbal 1-5s to rendezvous. If I can't actually recreate Gemini, might as well use what I have. [22:47:04] Tank2333: how have you been [22:47:40] alright i guess :) and self?
