But otherwise awesome! [17:24:58] nah doesn't even need balancing, there is no vibrations [17:25:17] But in the video it seems to be unbalanced [17:25:35] well it isn't [17:25:40] but the plastic does flex a bit [17:31:47] Hi there! Is anyone bored enough to have a look at one of my craft files? I have a little issue. [17:32:50] More specifically, I made my first spaceplane, and while it is easy to fly and capable of reaching orbit, I'm not too happy with the controls. [17:33:36] In level flight, it's stable, but whenever I pitch up, it rolls slightly to the left, which is a little annoying during ascent, and even more so while landing. [17:33:57] is it 1.4.3 and stock? [17:34:23] Because it always rolls to the left, I think the culprit is not aerodynamic instability, but an assymmetry somewhere in the design, but I can't find it. [17:34:34] Yes, it's stock 1.4.3. Here's the craft file: http://ix.io/1dGP [17:34:37] I can help [17:35:07] *asymmetry :) [17:37:11] Okay let me boot it up and see here. [17:38:24] IIRC, the issue gets more pronounced when the fuel runs low. [17:39:03] So you might want to remove the fuel from the wing tanks for easier reproduction. [17:39:38] Yeah, less weight the plane has, the more aerodynamic forces act on the plane. [17:43:27] hmmm, I've had this same thing happen to me before, the tail fin is too small, and it makes it want to yaw. [17:44:29] I'm trying to fix it for ya. [17:44:37] Thanks! [17:45:47] So you think the issue is indeed aerodynamic instability, and it's just a coincidence that it always rolls left, never right? [17:46:29] Yeah [18:02:51] https://app.box.com/s/iz4g5rfvpmyivqmtjb43us1sjzpzno2s - Here ya go Tantalo, I'll send the bill to Jebediah. [18:04:22] Thanks, I'll give it a try. [18:13:51] poor Jeb... wonder how many bills he's collected over the years since the game came out.. [18:14:23] Lots of bills. [18:14:53] jeb collects bills? bill collets bobs? [18:15:48] Draconiator: Yep, issue is mostly gone now, unless the tanks are nearly dry. Thanks! [18:16:00] Why did you replace the front canards, btw? [18:16:00] guess the fame he's garnered, people think he's making a ton of money or something [18:16:13] you think he's not? [18:16:24] kerbals make money? [18:16:31] I thought they just did it for the thrills [18:16:36] hiring them costs some credits [18:16:39] He's probably spending it all on hotrods. [18:16:40] What do you think they're paid in, exposure? [18:16:41] funds [18:17:08] costs money to hire 'other' kerbals... [18:17:23] Who hires kerbals though? [18:18:07] TakeTwo [18:18:11] hehe [18:18:29] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+o APlayer' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [18:18:30] I don't think I ever hired a single one, I just occasionally fly rescue missions. [18:18:48] who keeps stranding kerbals that you have to rescue? [18:19:00] you guys don't sound like very nice employers [18:19:25] Yeah, it's hard to believe there are other space agencies with even worse safety standards. [18:19:49] I'd rather not see them go poof... then again, I've gotten rather good at the game... [18:20:11] mind you... that kerbal comics about game reversions? (whatever happened to the comics anyways?) [18:38:49] Is there some way to adjust the properties of parts if I can't click on them because they're covered by other parts? [18:39:25] A while ago, I had that problem when I accidentally moved an RCS port to deep into the fuselage; I could only remove it by editing the craft file manually. [18:39:26] its not letting you select? [18:39:44] you could try moving your view point to the inside of the part its on [18:40:03] Hmm, that might work. Thanks! [18:40:43] sometimes its a little tricky... view point having certain limits. can sort of get around it by moving the craft itself, just be sure to place it back, else it won't be centered when you launch [18:41:40] .... the days when we built stuff before part's offset was a thing... [18:42:26] Eek, that sounds nasty. [18:42:32] https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/254984631512858634/457978287893905430/DSC_9208.JPG [18:46:39] Fluburtur you seen the flitetest youtube video them finally getting around to using the 3d printed motor that was sent to them? [18:46:47] yeah [18:46:49] was pretty nice [18:47:04] didn't notice the smoke coming out of it till after I saw mention in the comments [18:47:17] there was smoke? [18:47:23] I guess 12s was a but much then [18:47:25] right as the motor died [18:47:31] heh [18:47:36] probably some coil burning [18:47:47] Josh even mentioned it at the end... but didn't want to say anything at first [18:48:17] https://youtu.be/ZSoZqwqtu50 [18:48:17] YouTube - R 20 maiden [18:48:36] quicksilver ultralight cute little plane, old design... my airfield manager would probably try to melt it for scrap if he saw one on his field [18:48:59] heh [18:49:50] transitbiker will need to give a name to this model [18:50:14] I don't know.. he does seem rather particular of the kind of planes flying out of his field... [18:50:35] "no you can't land I don't like your plane" [18:50:48] have to take off in order to land [18:52:12] but what if someone is flying from one place to another and needs to stop [18:52:17] to like get a drink or something [18:53:35] Why did you replace the front canards, btw? - even more stability. [18:53:58] Draconiator I develloped a new light fighter [18:54:03] One thing I couldn't fix though... [18:54:18] THE ENGINES STILL SOUND LIKE DANGED VACCUMM CLEANERS [18:54:26] flying along the k919 https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/254984631512858634/457505088999784448/Sans_titre_2.jpg [18:54:46] designed to have good turnfight capabilities but likes to flat spin on hard turns [18:54:58] it can recover but takes like 10 seconds and it loses a lot of speed then [18:55:25] Hm. too wide maybe. [18:55:39] nah [18:55:48] it flies well until you get to a certain AoA [18:56:01] and if you turn at the same time [18:56:04] fluburtur tailfins? [18:56:09] goes to a pitch spin then a yaw spin [18:56:40] ... got a pic of the design? [18:56:54] no but I could send you a similar one [18:57:02] wait maybe I do [18:57:18] that design was actually a happy accident [18:57:27] when one of my planes lost the tail and kept on flying just fine [18:57:38] planks are somewhat popular in rc stuff [18:57:52] ah [18:57:58] but you have to get the CG perfect [18:58:03] https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/413109312802521098/457982236902555676/20180528223005_1.jpg [18:58:48] uff... [18:59:05] that was the original "incident" https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/413109312802521098/457982482193580055/20180409173601_1.jpg [18:59:13] rudder doesn't cause too much roll when used? [18:59:18] idk [18:59:29] seems to be fine [19:00:19] but it has the problem with BDA when the autopilot is flying it [19:00:34] I tried to tweak it but when I get it to not stall out it doesn't turn a lot [19:00:45] you got control surfaces far out, so probably compensates.. don't know about ya authority rudder a bit close to CL [19:00:59] BDA? [19:01:13] bd armory [19:01:26] oh right.. noticed you've got kerbinside. :) [19:01:29] and do you know a similar plane was develloped during WWII http://www.unicraft.biz/on/sigma/sigmabox.jpg [19:02:06] I'm a little cautious about putting fins on wing tips, it might help more with side slip than with ya control... [19:02:13] http://ram-home.com/ram-old/sam-7.html [19:03:04] curious [19:03:15] yeah [19:03:26] I guess my problem is from stalling at weird angles [19:03:49] the overall body shape can also help with airflow control too.. just depends [19:04:46] AoA can be a bit of a problem if its too high.. causes some control surfaces, mainly the rudder to end up putting forces at odd angles [19:05:10] symetrical rudder then? [19:05:19] or maybe rudder on the end of wings like in the sigma [19:05:21] not so much that [19:05:46] is it a slight AoA that causes spin outs, or the more extreme end? [19:05:57] more extreme [19:06:03] above 35° it seems [19:06:11] and during a roll turn [19:06:29] basically it seems to snap for 90° of aoa then go into a spin [19:07:19] 35 degree is medium, start to heavy.. consider it a design limitation? [19:07:26] maybe [19:07:35] I coudl try reducing the control surfaces movement [19:07:40] you probably pulling quite a few 'g's at that pitch [19:07:49] I added the panthers to give it post stall control but it doesn't doo much [19:08:10] could try pulling the tail out further... [19:08:19] the rudder? [19:08:21] just the rudder.. see if that does anything.. [19:08:34] maybe [19:08:53] but it starts as a pitch spin so I think it will only affect the recovery [19:09:10] might just be too close to the CoL... though I'm surprised you've that much pitch authority off the back of the wings where they are. CL and CoL must be pretty close [19:09:33] it gives very good pitch actually [19:09:38] because it is short coupled [19:10:17] but good stability as well [19:10:52] anyways, shower time [19:11:07] if you replicate that design the CG needs to be very close to the COL [19:11:24] I usually give my control surfaces a bit more movement arm, though challenge is in keeping CoL and CoM in the right places for all rotations [19:11:56] ya... I think when you pitch, throws CoL forwards in the KSP modeling.. whats causing you to spin [19:12:24] you can try testing, moving the control surfaces just a slight bit in pitch in the hangar... [19:14:54] its just a thought. sometimes I'll pitch my elevator a little, help push the CoL forwards closer to the CoM.. built in trim in a way [19:15:05] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+o APlayer' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [19:38:42] Last message repeated 2 time(s).
