For example, how do I calculate the Dv budget needed for a return from the surface of Mun? [08:58:57] add the numbers as you move towards your goal [09:01:22] Althego, but that means that I need 580+310+860 m/s from Mun to Kerbin [09:01:30] no [09:01:33] Everyone always says 1000 is plenty [09:01:33] because there is an arrow [09:01:38] showing aerobreak possible [09:01:43] then you dont need to add those [09:01:45] Oh right, aerobraking [09:02:08] but that is your choice, you can and sometimes have to break by fuel, say without heatshields [09:02:15] Good point, thanks. So the numbers read both ways in the map [09:02:34] gravity is a conservative force field in clasical mechanics [09:02:38] direction does not matter [09:02:55] So, conversely, to get from LKO to Mun orbit would be 1170 [09:03:13] Then 580 to land [09:03:24] sounds about right [09:03:30] Thanks [09:03:40] but in practice you can go with 300 or less [09:03:55] because of aero [09:05:22] Aero on Mun? [09:05:37] ah i meant from mun to kerbin [09:05:39] :) [09:05:49] also remember that landing usually takes more [09:05:57] because you never land on a perfect trajectory [09:06:22] except if mechjeb or something similar is doing it for you [09:06:39] True, and I an playing with no reverts, so I'll want an extra margin [09:08:00] my rough figures are 900+300 from LKO to Mun, 800 to land, 600 to get back up and 300 to get back to Kerbin [09:08:07] so just about ~3000m/s [09:09:23] Looks about right [09:12:12] Thanks for the help guys [09:14:15] ooof [09:20:03] Hmm... does anyone know a way to make a faring larger than the engine it is attached to? [09:20:32] you mean the auto fairing? [09:20:35] Yeah [09:20:43] no, that is fixed [09:20:54] but you can turn it off and use your own interstage fairing [09:21:10] I have a small engine attached to a bigger tank, so I want to interstage faring to match the size [09:21:14] of the tank [09:21:24] I often use a payload fairing for that [09:21:30] yes, that [09:21:38] you can shape that to your liking [09:21:50] I haven't unlocked it yet [09:22:03] then add a converter part [09:22:10] but i never use those, they add mass :) [09:22:28] Converter part? You mean an adapter? [09:22:31] I've read of people using the hollow tubes as interstage fairings [09:22:32] that [09:22:45] Hrrm. I can't see how an adapter would work [09:23:08] would decrease the diameter at the end of the tank to the size of your engine [09:23:29] Oh right. [09:24:05] Well... I wanted to make the rocket gradually get fatter towards the bottom, but I suppose bulgy is preferable to downright odd [09:26:04] Now I have to find another way of fitting the landing legs... [09:27:22] where we are going we dont need landing legs [09:27:38] these are not the landing legs you are looking for [09:28:24] don't hide your landing legs. they don't have that much drag in the atmosphere, anyway [09:28:24] Hehe [09:28:51] I'm not trying to hide them, I'm just trying to fit them. The adapter is sloped inwards [09:29:06] But I think the legs can stretch to the ground from the part above, just about [09:39:50] soft landing is overrated [09:40:28] Well, not that you say that, I only really need that engine for landing... [09:40:34] not=now* [10:21:01] boomrocket. https://futurism.com/the-byte/rocket-design-powered-by-explosions [11:13:43] KSP works fine with Mouse/Keyboard forwarding through synergy from another computer. :) Fishing Planet does not :( [13:30:03] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+v eriophora' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [14:02:39] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+o Judge_Dedd' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [14:52:57] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+o Mostly_Deddly' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [15:34:08] Last message repeated 1 time(s).
