[16:00:37] ...and once I get there: no transit :/ [16:00:57] the original idea was to let freight operators to shed passenger services, and let amtrak handle it, or state funded amtrak operated services handle it, but you can't od that them give amtrak a hard time with scheduling and stuff, the freight carriers need to be more flexible [16:01:54] then the other option is putting in additional tracks, butthat's also complicated because the freight carrier owns the right of way [16:02:03] yeah, i hear ya [16:02:13] yeah, we have the same issue in the local Montreal trains to the suburbs [16:02:19] AMT [16:02:24] yup [16:02:46] they share a lot of equipment with new jersey transit [16:02:52] split orders etc [16:02:52] Aside from some new contructions, they don't own the tracks [16:03:53] new jersey transit operates along amtrak's northeast corridor from trenton to new york penn, but amtrak does not own any of the stations aside from new york penn and a big new park and ride at metropark [16:04:40] so NJT can freely upgrade its facilities as it needs to, but running the trains themselves will always involve at least amtrak [16:05:01] they share new york penn with long island railroad, and state funded amtrak empire corridor service [16:05:50] its like a constantly changing 3D jigsaw puzzle to get anything done, even without the national polotical stuff in the picture [16:07:30] i know metrolix in ontario is putting in some heavy investments into their GO rail system, but i think Quebec has a different political landscape [16:07:31] yeah... compare that with the JR Rail where the 'acceptable delay' to any train is 10 seconds [16:08:21] hm, wel lto be fair, they had an almost blank canvas to work with on their shinkansen routes, because it was almost all new construction, especially though city centers [16:08:55] also, there's a big cultrual difference, where having stuff work properly is a source of great pride [16:08:56] yeah, but they needed a new law because they don't have 'eminant domain' or whatever it's called... [16:18:12] we'll see [16:18:28] I wish they would just finish the blue line [16:19:32] I heard Metro line extention promises since... 1980s [16:19:47] one of the things that would, i think, really motivate transportation efficiencies and usefulness would be funding parity [16:20:35] This is still Car Kingdom... mostly [16:21:10] if you look at a chart of fund allocations in the US, you will see highway/road funding very high, airpport and airtraffic funding is high but comes in second, then fumbling along down along the bottom fo the chart is rail and transit [16:21:58] if you put the same amount of money into rail and transit that you did road/highway, holy cow we;d be cooking with gas, tons of jobs to go around too [16:24:07] and eventually your highway/road funding would decrease, because there would be less need because of fewer private vehicles, and eventually your stair of good repair would be up to date, and systems would mature so your rail/transit funding need would decrease, but the level of jobs needed wouldnt just drop back, it would retain a meaningful percent of the initial construction etc jobs [16:24:20] state of good repair* [16:24:50] yeah... welll.... politics. so not gonna touch that one :/ [16:24:56] mhm [16:26:19] some of the side benefits are increased employee productivity due to less travel stresses, better employment availability for people because of the increased travel options, and more attractive to business investments because people want to actually use the system and live in that region [16:27:48] i think i'm most frustrated about the whole situation in north america, because we are in our own way on these kinds of issues [16:28:34] My experience is limited: I live in a bubble [16:29:03] its like us and canada are teenagers that moved out of parents house, and still trying to figure how to do things, hehe [16:29:43] i need more water [16:32:18] and I need to make this stupid Docker container working....
