[00:07:55] Yo. [00:08:10] Time to make another SSTO. [00:10:41] Let's go with tandem wings this time, that sounds fun. [00:20:26] Yeah, no. [00:20:28] Conventional wings, please. [00:38:16] Oh crap, FAR tells you what the stability derivatives mean when you mouse over them. [00:38:40] So, my ship seems to start yawin' once it reaches about mach 0.24. [00:40:25] I notice that it'll happily give me stability information for mach 200. [00:44:01] I dunno, the stability derivatives for yaw look great. [00:45:24] anyone got the technical feed link for the launch? [00:46:26] Not the hosted one [00:49:31] Flies great once it gets into the air. It's only a problem on the ground. [00:50:31] Landing gear wobbles? [00:51:03] I know some fixes to various issues with landing gear. [00:51:14] If you give symptoms I may be able to help you fix it. [00:51:30] Biggest one is don't ever have landing gear angled. You always want them straight up and down. [00:51:57] Angles cause funky stuff with the springs that creates a positive feedback loop yawing. [00:52:08] left-right-left-right-crash [00:52:33] It actually flies really well without any control input at all. [00:52:45] Right up until making a descent into the ocean at 200,000 fpm. [00:53:08] Other thing is you want to force the craft off the ground instead of letting it autorotate. Landing gear get finicky when under light load such as when starting to lift off. [00:53:37] I like how the Shuttle has shorter front gear to create loads of downforce after landing. [00:54:21] Nice design choice. Retractable landing gear, not such a great idea. I saw a Space Camp shuttle simulation crash because the pilot put the gear down and the co-pilot put them back up. [00:54:51] They noticed it but not in time to get them down again before landing. [00:56:49] I'm trying to get a video of my problem. [00:57:45] The Windows game bar recorder thing is giving me the "There's nothing to record" error. [00:58:05] Which is a very confusing error message. [00:59:29] What do you mean, there's nothing to record? Record *my screen*, please. [01:02:44] This *used* to work, I'm sure. [01:02:58] I'll try rebooting. [01:03:35] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtdjCwo6d3Q it begins. Is there a link to the techincal webcast anywhere? [01:03:35] YouTube - Iridium-4 Webcast [01:13:19] Webcast just started [01:13:28] Is there a technical webcast? [01:13:40] I like those more cause I get to listen to controllers talking about stuff. [01:14:32] No technical [01:14:50] Also, seems like they aren't going for a first stage recovery, or at least it was not listed on the timeline [01:15:26] They are chucking it [01:15:59] They can't remove the grid fins easily? [01:16:02] Or they use them for targeting the re-entry? [01:19:38] Success! The recorder doodad started working when I rebooted. [01:19:48] Sounds like they are doing a water landing for some reason [01:19:55] Nyow... is there some nice quick video sharing site? [01:19:57] Water ditche or landing? [01:20:09] Lt Rocket, you ain't got no legs. [01:20:11] one chill rocket [01:20:44] If they have the fuel to practice a landing then they have the fuel to actually land it. [01:20:46] ugh.. 13 dislikes already.. why..? [01:20:58] 14 [01:21:09] .. thats like 1 dislike a minute.. [01:21:25] 1 second launch window. [01:21:27] Wow. [01:21:35] geo stationary I'm guessing? [01:21:42] Not a clue [01:21:47] Iridium sats [01:21:50] 15 dislikes [01:22:22] gps.. [01:22:34] think... but ya gps needs precise orbits [01:23:06] My landing gear seems to be straight as an arrow. It's just that there's a tiny yaw which, for whatever reason, turns into a huge yaw. [01:23:21] I mean, maybe it's related to the gear somehow. [01:24:58] hmm... pic of craft? [01:25:52] Need an ass shot. [01:26:08] send pics ;) [01:26:49] Ass pending... [01:26:58] it coudl be a number of things.. pictures tell quicker than describing. [01:27:23] Butt shot so we can see width, then side shot with CoM [01:29:09] Some terrible camera shots. [01:29:24] I know some placements on the gear, specifically on angled surfaces used to cause problems [01:29:49] Handheld cameras [01:30:04] srsl [01:30:17] They had a freaking telescope watching the CRS launch [01:30:29] Rock solid views for 2 minutes. [01:30:39] Oh, they are doing boostback [01:30:45] Ass shot: https://i.imgur.com/NqoamSS.jpg [01:31:03] lol.. that second stage blased the booster pretty good [01:31:43] I wonder how much each of those cameras on the second stage cost. [01:32:03] Side shot with CoM: https://i.imgur.com/59plM5Q.jpg [01:32:18] probably not much... don't forget it also needs transmitter and power bus connections as well [01:32:26] atennea.. [01:32:35] Are the gear mounted to the body or the wings? [01:32:40] The body. [01:32:55] I remember early days of car racing, camera gear used to be pretty big [01:33:11] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+o Dman979' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [01:33:21] hmm... [01:33:45] warrigal is it yawing on the ground or after you getinto flight? [01:33:50] On the ground. [01:34:06] Once I'm in the air, there seems to be no problem. [01:34:12] https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/900022878180917823/6E409F57CBF6FFE8905EC993E7FB148814D2EE21/ I'd recommend this build instead. Wing strakes hold fuel and reduce drag. Elevron 1 have faster reaction times than tail fins. [01:34:42] You can pull the landing gear off and re place them. [01:34:48] It might be finicky [01:34:56] warrigal a checklist of things if you will... 1) main gear steering is off, 2) bump up spring and dampners slightly on main gear, 3) try to see if widing your stance on the main gear helps [01:35:04] You can put the rear gear further toward the back. [01:35:19] Reduce friction control on front gear to zero. [01:35:27] I find that narrow stance and long gears that put the plane high off the ground causes some minor issues [01:35:28] Things to try. No idea if it will help. [01:35:36] Delta wings, very low aspect ratio, elevons... Blaank, I don't see your vertical stabilizer. [01:35:37] you don't need to zero friction on main gear [01:35:50] you want some friction.. helps steer.. a little. [01:36:04] 2x elevron 1 vertical. 2x horizontal. [01:36:15] They make a + shape [01:36:29] Blaank cute little ship.. did similar stuff myself [01:36:37] It handles pretty well. [01:36:57] the fact that rapiers don't make power though.. i generally shut gyro off till I get in space and engines off [01:37:01] It's a spaceplane trainer. [01:37:03] see you have rtgs though [01:37:19] first stage splashed [01:37:31] Did it try to make a landing or did they crash it? [01:37:37] just crashed it [01:37:43] no attempt [01:37:45] Why not take off the grid fins? [01:38:08] costs money to remove? There is a lot behind those things [01:38:14] Blaank: why the low aspect ratio? [01:38:20] I don't know any of the motivations behind aspect ratio. [01:38:23] could also be balancing [01:38:24] low aspect ratio of what? [01:38:48] low aspect rastion: think glider wings [01:38:53] ratio.. ugh sorry [01:39:15] I think the wing strakes have less drag than small delta wings. [01:39:19] I don't know. [01:39:27] They also hold LF for the air ascent. [01:39:43] I've used both strakes and form of wings.. helps a bit [01:40:41] small craft needs a little bit of wings for lift.. [01:40:44] Blaank: your wings. [01:41:08] I haven't tested but I think they are lower drag than small delta wings. [01:41:21] And they hold LF so that's a bonus. [01:41:32] his wings are considered high aspect... long and stubby.. they work as good, in real life, don't forget you have a shock cone from teh front of the aircrarft to worry about at high speeds [01:42:36] Doesn't high aspect ratio mean like a glider? Long span, short chord? [01:42:42] no [01:42:47] it does [01:43:00] this helps [01:43:01] https://www.sciencelearn.org.nz/system/images/images/000/000/704/embed/FLT_SCI_ART_04_Wing_aspect_ratio_LowToHighRatios.jpg?1452416335 [01:43:13] though gliders are pretty extreme [01:43:14] sorry I had it backwards... derp [01:43:59] high speeds, you want to keep your wings within the shock area created by the point of the craft... [01:44:24] gliders don't have that issue, wide wings helps with lift in slow air speeds [01:45:07] doubt ksp models wing tip vortices.. but here: http://www.boldmethod.com/images/learn-to-fly/aircraft-systems/how-does-aspect-ratio-affect-a-wing/drag.jpg [01:45:36] KSP (stock) butchers aspect ratio anyway [01:45:48] Aspect ratio does nothing in KSP. [01:45:55] But having less wide wings I think reduces drag. [01:45:57] (if you want sensible aspect ratio handling, you need to use FAR) [01:46:24] ugh.. super sonic glider wings... riiiiight. [01:46:29] I try to make things within reason from what I know [01:46:32] stock auto-adjusts your aspect ratio for high lift when slow and low drag when fast [01:46:51] Warrigal any luck with the plane yet? [01:47:43] meh.. I remember when you could go faster than orbit at 69km up on just jet engines bakc in early versions.. but anyways [01:48:44] they're still way OPO [01:48:51] minus one O [01:49:27] I play to have fun.. I wanna proper sim, I'd download flightsim or just go out and fly an actual plane [01:50:13] guh, if anything, I should probably get around to playing more nad making recordings. [01:50:23] stacking all the air intakes [01:50:32] So like 60 air intakes and 1 rapier [01:53:28] I am using FAR. [01:53:45] Anyway, I made the main gear wider, that didn't fix it. Now I'm changing the... [01:53:54] I'm gonna change the height of the gear so that the plane is level when it's on the ground. [01:54:05] So that I won't get much lift before rotation. [01:54:08] Dunno if that'll help any. [01:57:06] SpaceX did not try to recover the first stage from tonight's launch. Anyone know why? [01:59:14] Whelp, that seemed to help a decent amount! [01:59:20] Now I can just rotate as soon as it starts to yaw. [01:59:46] It's most likely they needed all the fuel for the payload. [02:00:26] Taking landing legs off also increases payload. [02:01:25] They had the entry burn and the grid fans and everything, just no boats. [02:01:59] too lazy to revert to vav [02:02:02] vab [02:06:36] Man, a Rapier burns through an FL-T800 pretty quick. [02:16:30] Lot easier if you have an extra 200 LF kicking around in the wings. [02:17:13] 45 degree climb to 5 km then 15 degree ascent from there. [02:17:26] considering they launched out of Vandenburg and going directly south... could be combination of no barge or recovery systems, the weight of payload, launch profile itself. [02:17:31] 80 km ap, then cicularize at around 75 km due to drag. [02:17:46] polar orbit? [02:18:09] ya they were launching just as sun was setting [02:18:35] though.. they had 10 sats onboard. [02:25:01] They still have. [02:25:15] sat deployment imminent https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtdjCwo6d3Q [02:25:15] YouTube - Iridium-4 Webcast [02:25:37] Whelp. I was at 20km up, mach 5.6, and the plane was wagging in pitch pretty darn good. Felt like a period of about one second, and a range of about... 15 degrees? [02:26:54] So that means bad dynamic pitch stability, yeah? [02:27:15] And the most important stability derivative there seems to be Mq. Right? [02:27:34] FAR says that my Mq is -0.0005 s^-1. [02:44:15] I cant be the only one who is wondering what happened to Spacedock? Any news? [02:47:10] end of month with lots of updates posted... probably reached bandwidth limit. (I have no news, just a guess) [02:47:20] oh, he left [02:47:45] Does the plane wiggle with SAS off? [02:47:58] Tailplanes have a really bad habit of being slow to respond and overcompensating. [02:48:08] Which is part of why I use elevrons isntead [02:49:16] If it's stable with SAS off and wiggles with SAS on, it's SAS causing it. [02:49:18] Easy test. [03:43:37] Sons and daughters of Kerbin: I heard them say we've reached Morrowind, I'm sure they'll let us go . . . Unless you're an Argonian or Khajitt. [11:09:59] usually because the maximum payload is almost half in case the returning launches [11:15:42] But fuel shouldn't be the problem here, all other stages from Iridum launches were recovered. [11:17:15] depends on the orbit too [11:17:27] probably needed some plane change [11:23:35] possible. But I still wonder [11:23:49] But have you seen the pictures from Los Angeles? [11:24:07] no [11:24:11] How cool would it have been if you could see the first stage power backwards to land :D [11:24:17] You haven't? [11:24:21] Now I have to look up some. [14:11:05] some years old [14:11:43] most phones [14:12:43] the last 32 bit cpu i remember on x86 was the atom architecture [14:13:59] so basically if you had anything but intel atom the last 12 years, you had 64 bit [14:48:24] well, most phones now. But in a few years (month?) it's going to be 64 bit there as well. [18:50:04] but it looks like it is rotating quuickly [18:50:12] It turned 90 degrees and fired what was left of it's fuel. [18:50:16] or maybe it is just turbulence [18:50:28] Yu cant' see the actual rocket from that. IT should be all plume. [18:50:54] First stage did fire up very quickly after separation as well so that is adding it's own plume. [18:51:28] Must have been pretty crazy seeing that. [19:27:28] Does it go around the back side? [19:32:13] no, it must go above earth as the sun and moon [19:32:24] because there is no gravity [19:33:01] I don't think they argue there is no gravity. [19:33:06] I mean you drop a stone and it falls. [19:33:18] no, most of them do [19:33:26] they even argue that the iss doesnt exist lol [19:34:10] You can observe and put to a mathematical formula gravity by testing with a rock and a piece of posterboard with grid markings. [19:34:30] they argue that is is because of density [19:34:31] You throw it then measure the arc and then come up with math formula to explain it. [19:34:31] rofl [19:34:38] it is so childlike [19:35:17] And an acceleration of 9.8m/s^s towards the center of our object matches observations. [19:35:47] So you determine that everything is pulled down at that exact same rate. [19:36:57] You can even test the feather/hammer thing with a home made vacuum chamber. [19:54:38] you can even test it with a good scale (something that measures weight) [19:54:47] and travel in north-south direction [19:54:56] and the weight is going to change [20:09:54] this is like the worst solder I have ever used [20:17:23] so, why are you using it then? [20:19:27] that is an american thing [20:19:35] Fluburtur: is your iron getting hot enough? [20:19:43] Althego: sorry, that's fake news ;P [20:19:44] Umm, lead-free solder was a Europe thing before an America thing. [20:19:53] no, radio schack [20:20:03] Ah, yeah, well, it's a no-longer thing for the most part. :-( [20:20:18] even if it is hot enough, leadfree will never make as goo joint as a leaded solder [20:20:22] yes it's the iron I use for big stuff [20:21:00] well, the first lead free solders were pretty bad. Needed hot temperatures, sucked up the temperature good, etc. [20:21:16] recent stuff is pretty good. Some are even better than the old leaded stuff [20:21:41] but who knows how old yours is [20:22:23] yeah [20:22:32] I need to find like a 1kg roll of leaded [20:22:39] that would last me a year [20:22:56] and it's very bad for your health [20:23:22] I have a gaz mask [20:23:58] notthat bad [20:24:01] and you exchange the filter how often? [20:24:51] well I have never changed this one actually [20:24:58] hehe [20:25:00] that one is dead [20:25:01] I need to go to a surplus to get a few [20:25:19] Woo, finally got my first asteroid mission. [20:26:00] I have no idea how to do it. [20:26:58] Go there, find out :D [20:27:32] dont do it [20:27:38] My mental model is a lander but with a grabber instead of a descent engine and drills instead of landing legs, plus converter to lf/ox [20:27:46] ok, you need mining because you cant get enough dlta v otherwise [20:28:06] The idea of stripmining the asteroid for the resources necessary to move it seems efficient. [20:28:18] i am sad that there never was delta v rocket :) [20:28:28] instead we got delta iv and atlas v [20:30:53] https://78.media.tumblr.com/ee37a7c1f754a5953facdedfd36fe1e2/tumblr_os1n4z6otZ1twki9io1_500.jpg [20:30:53] Fluburtur: if possible, try to get some solder wire from Almit [20:31:01] what's that [20:32:38] Almit is a company from Japan and they make excellent solder. [20:33:18] and how expensive is it? [20:33:28] you know I only use expensive crap when I get it for free [20:34:23] pixelcat [20:37:17] Can you even get lead based solder in the USA anymore? I've never seen any for sale. [20:37:52] only in grandpa's toolbox [20:40:25] I don't think plumbers use it anymore [20:41:55] Momentarily on-topic, a tiny mod that added sort-by-recently-flown/modified would be nice for editor and launch selection [20:43:05] it would be even better if i could hide the stock craft [20:43:11] in sandbox [20:43:21] They'll fall to the bottom soon enough [20:43:30] But that is a good feature idea [20:44:36] if you can change sort order than ok [20:44:50] Yeah, this would be adding an additional sort order to the ones that exist [20:45:00] Launch pad offers name, mass, cost, size [20:45:02] Just like editor with parts. [20:45:16] This mod would add 'recent', plus add all five to the editor's open page [20:52:45] Ugh, I'm reaching the point in my current KSP game where I want to pitch it all and start over, but "differently". [20:52:58] hehe [20:53:00] do it [20:53:19] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXsQAXx_ao0 [20:53:19] YouTube - Shia LaBeouf "Just Do It" Motivational Speech (Original Video by LaBeouf, Rönkkö & Turner) [21:01:44] This time around, I want more kOS/kRPC and KIS/KAS [21:09:45] Using HyperEdit for the first time. Placed vessel on KSC launchpad, opened Hyperedit, selected Ship Lander, set vessel to active vessel, set body to Minmus, it warns me about landing on another body, I do it anyway, and it's landing me at Kerbin instead. :-( [21:10:42] Or at least it's got ocean! [21:12:18] Used orbit editor to put it in minmus orbit, then tried again, *seemed* better. [21:18:15] Yeah, it's a graphical glitch, but w/e [21:24:34] The nice thing is it lets me test some theories I have about mining, to better design craft for another mission. [21:26:46] Eight drills require between zero and one huge radiator's ability to radiate heat, for instance. [21:27:13] Between one and two to *drop* the temp, one appears to hold it stable. [21:27:37] 12.05% of one to maintain max core temp [21:29:12] https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/368835402431332365/394240022712287263/DSC_8114.JPG [21:29:40] Are you making that? [21:29:47] yeah [21:30:04] just need to find a way to secure the battery, put props n, balance it ant it will be ready to fly [21:30:05] Also, eight drills and one converter need at least seven big solar panels to maintain zero loss in power. [21:30:22] [secure] Velcro? [21:30:47] probably a velcro strap yeah [21:30:51] needs to hold really well [21:31:24] Ugh, my mining craft wiggles too much to warp! [21:32:13] :3 [21:33:20] Proof of concept, though, grand. [21:43:17] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+o Supernovy' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [21:43:36] Evening, Gentlemen. [21:59:45] ello [22:45:31] Stupid keystroke commands being interpreted when typing in save windows and stuff. [22:49:24] For those of you who save vessels to reuse between games, do you go through the effort of separating "early" from "late" game parts? I.e., make ships that use crappy batteries and smaller fuel tanks for when that's all you have? [22:49:37] Or do you just skip that part and play sandbox since that's not what you like? [22:51:19] Mathuin: I make re-make everything everytime [22:51:32] ve2dmn: Doesn't that feel repetitive? [22:51:47] a bit. But the keep the same concetps [22:52:04] s/the/I/ [22:52:10] For my next game, I'm seriously consider making simple ships and writing kOS/kRPC code to implement missions. [22:52:38] Then I suggest you make several 'generations' of ships [22:53:00] like an Atlas-class, a gemini-class, a genesis-class, etc... [22:53:11] That's what I was thinking, too. [22:53:27] Defining the generations is the hard part. [22:53:40] Alphabetically [22:54:43] I worry more about what constitutes a generation than which generation is which. :-) [22:55:24] The 'column' in R&D ? [22:55:57] That's not unreasonable, at least at first. [22:56:39] I have 0 through 8 for tree depth here. [22:57:22] Appending a suffix for the tech depth would be good. 'Kerbin Polar Orbiter 4' or whatever. [22:57:39] v1, v2, v3 [22:58:09] It's a shame mods can't be enabled on a per-game basis. [22:58:50] So the Adam Kerbin Orbiter Mark1 is crappier then the Adam Kerbin Orbiter Mark 2 which has lower parts then the Bravo Kerbin ORbiter Mark 1 [22:59:40] Right now I use Roman numerals for iterations -- Mun Lander III and the like [23:00:01] Whatever float your boat... [23:00:12] ...or flights your rockets [23:00:21] Prepending with Alpha-Hotel would be good for depth. Not like it really matters. :-) [23:00:33] Someone told me kOS support ship tagging. [23:00:55] Part tagging or ship tagging? [23:01:12] I don't recall, lemme look. [23:01:37] I seem to rememeber part tagging [23:01:51] Part tagging would be even better, because then the ship's tech depth could be automatically determined. [23:01:53] (I don't use it) [23:07:17] What are your thoughts on 'unmanned versus manned' to reorder the tree to more closely resemble the real space program? [23:08:37] ryan2390: hello again [23:08:51] Hello again ve2dmn [23:08:55] Now I'm getting dizzy [23:09:18] :D [23:10:40] Mathuin: but I should get back to my kOS stuff. I have 2 week off [23:11:25] I like the idea of kOS because I want to program my ships and run them from within RPM somehow. [23:11:55] https://np.reddit.com/r/Kos/comments/6qja87/i_made_an_ascent_autopilot_using_the_actual_space/ stuff like this seems amazing [23:12:47] RPM? [23:13:05] https://www.reddit.com/r/KerbalSpaceProgram/comments/7ljc12/when_your_precision_landing_script_is_too_precise/ [23:13:48] Raster Prop Monitor [23:14:21] https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/105821-131-rasterpropmonitor-still-putting-the-a-in-iva-v0292-18-october-2017/ [23:14:38] any idea why some KSPI parts cause my crafts to launch themselves before I engage any engines? [23:14:55] Is KSPI a mod? [23:15:05] yes [23:15:11] KSP Intersteller Extended [23:15:23] Huh! Which parts? I don't use it but I"m curious. [23:15:44] Not sure yet, tryuing to find the exact part [23:16:05] I think it is the Open Cycle Gas Core Fissiom Reactor [23:16:06] And so they launch as soon as the physics eases on the launchpad ? [23:16:22] yep [23:16:32] at something like 1.xx m/s [23:16:39] where xx seems to change [23:16:47] without any explination [23:16:57] nope, not the reactor [23:16:58] Wacky [23:17:37] TIL that I have played the same number of hours in KSP then all my steam friends combined... [23:17:37] Very. Might be interaction to KJR or some other mod [23:18:48] ve2dmn: hee! [23:19:15] 1,480 hrs on record VS freind activity 1,826 hours played [23:19:27] not quite the same... but... [23:22:31] releated issue, engage encines (in this case solid rocket boosters) and the craft done't rise any faster [23:24:10] *doesn't [23:39:47] Okay, seriously entertained by the SKID chip in kOS. [23:39:57] Brings me back to my Commodore days. [23:44:07] Mathuin: Memories... [23:45:43] Sons and daughters of Kerbin: To advance the world of art, Earth's Moon will be converted into a brand new ring system. [23:46:08] We at Visari Art Institute apologize for the inconvenience that the new lack of tides will bring. [23:47:03] Also: The Stellaris Elder Scroll's Empire Pack should be out around Monday or Tuesday. [23:47:41] isn't already out? [23:48:37] I haven't developed time travel yet, so no. It'll be done when I'm done. [23:52:29] However, the Dwemer will be excluded if only because none of the avatars really seem to fit them (being fantasy Babylonians and all). [23:52:52] Scolar_Visari: "What do we want? Time Travel! When do we want it? Yes!" [23:54:20] The most trouble I've been having is finding making visible flags from the Elder Scrolls Online icons.
