I'm going to pass on that contract [17:03:37] oh, a new repair job contract. I'll try that one [17:03:51] haha [17:06:58] If they didn't return they'd be colonists, not tourists. [17:09:55] most of the delta v is burnt in the lover atmosphere. with electric props it should be possible to ascend to at least kerbin sea level pressure [17:11:00] I'm not ready yet for Eve ascents. I only just reached Eve orbit in this game, first time ever [17:11:49] packbart: Ever since you started playing KSP? [17:13:08] yes, indeed. My games usually didn't last that long for probes to reach other planets [17:13:14] it just takes too long [17:13:34] yes this is a huge problem [17:13:42] you can collect all the science from the mun and minmus [17:14:01] A 'relative newbie' on reddit asked for a hard challenge. I suggested an Eve water sample return mission. He picked a space station on Minmus someone else suggested :). [17:14:56] You get full science for each new lab you bring to Minmus. [17:15:15] not with Kerbalism [17:15:19] k [17:15:46] in Kerbalism, labs convert samples to transmissable (transmittable?) data [17:16:05] so you don't need to return that water sample, you could process it on Eve's surface [17:16:27] takes time and energy and scientists, though [17:16:43] IRL we can get more data out of samples on Earth. [17:17:09] only because we don't send staffed labs deep enough into space [17:18:07] Yeah. I guess if we sent staff to Mars, we could also bring most of our greatest instruments. [17:18:40] Or to Ryugu. [17:19:15] OTOH, we'd bring our staff back home, so we could just as well just fetch a sample. [17:19:22] the best equipment will always be on earth [17:19:36] In the 'near' term. [17:19:41] yes [17:19:46] which mean decades at least [17:20:01] so currently it is always better to bring back the sample [17:20:50] What analytical instruments are we lacking on the ISS? [17:21:07] To analyze samples. [17:21:28] Perhaps neutron activation. That could be done, too. [17:21:55] Maybe there's no x-ray fluorescence thing there. [17:22:02] spectroscope [17:24:54] no large particle accelerators on the ISS [17:25:29] Are they useful in sample analysis? [17:25:47] small accelerators may be useful for some kinds [17:26:01] yeah, I guess "spectroscope" covers those [17:26:23] MS is a particle accelerator. [17:26:38] I assume they have GCMS. [17:27:02] there is some material research ongoing on the iss so they surely have some equipment [17:27:07] but they also return samples too [17:27:29] I guess there's no electron microscope. [17:27:56] Wouldn't need a vacuum pump there :). [17:28:18] high vacuum pump* [17:28:59] although, IIRC we can create better vacuum on Earth than there is in LEO. [18:33:41] lol [18:35:03] then it is about time there should be [18:35:20] i cant even imagine how to make a proper zero g kitchen [18:37:20] Well yeah I imagine hot appliances in an oxygen rich environment, probably not the best of possibilities lol [18:38:18] iss is regular atmosphere [18:38:21] ^ [18:38:22] The RTG has 1200 K max, and will shutdown at 10,000 K. Typo? [18:38:23] but yes, still a problem [18:39:33] anyway out of all the submarine episodes of smarter every day, i liked the cooking part the best [19:23:21] Danny at it, again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MchPtdcR4Ug [19:23:23] :D [19:25:25] lol asteroid to the face [19:26:24] haha transcendent entity kerbal [19:35:14] But does a Minmus snowball taste like mint icecream? [19:37:20] you still cant move planets [19:37:31] and no taste experiment [19:38:03] Depends on what happens when you process a surface sample in a science lab [19:51:44] not again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xO5RHspqZVk [19:52:27] i guess that is the end of this banana too. and i didnt even know the previous, better one [19:56:30] Action: flayer tackles Althego [19:56:57] irc doesnt pass that through [19:57:08] yes it does, you're on the floor! [19:57:16] Action: flayer giggles and wanders off [22:19:59] In preparation to my comet expedition I took a trip with all available Kerbals to solar orbit so Bill would get a third star. It worked ... kinda. I forgot to pick up Bill from the orbital fuel station where I refuelled ... [22:20:34] oops [22:20:48] well, there's always the kerbals automatically levelup option [22:21:18] ok. I'll still load. [22:34:22] It didn't actually matter, cause I loaded/saved something wrong and didn't have the contract. [22:36:57] Confusing was that my dv predictions went wrong two ways. One was that I didn't have enough dv to return (I went fast to save time). I think it was due to Oberth effect. [22:38:37] The other was, that I had more dv than displayed because I had a fuel tank above a crossfeed enabled decoupler which KSP ignored when calculating dv. It was used first, so dv rose as it emptied. Then the lower tank was used. KER got it right.
